I have been an active member of
a healthcare team assisting registered nurses with the provision of clinical care in safe environment to a defined caseload of patients within both inpatient and outpatient settings. I am dedicated to caring for vulnerable adults and children. I am very passionate about putting my patient first, I make sure I provide adequate person-centered care and that’s while I believed this offer is for me. I always strive to improve the quality of healthcare of the patient am privileged to care for especially those suffering from different sicknesses support them through continuing professional development by communicating effectively while ensuring their safety and well being. My expertise over the years have opened me up to understanding how patients relates, communicates, feels and act.
Highlight of my experience are:
Understanding the importance of instructions and writing procedures. Carrying out instructions and writing procedures is one of my core responsibilities as a carer, because when I follow instructions, it guilds my daily activities, it reduces mistake at work place and also keep patients and staffs safe. Whenever I adhere to instruction and writing procedures, it directs me on how to perform a task diligently. For instance, the first time I used the ECG machine, at a point it became complicated especially on where to place the electrodes, immediately I referred to the instructions and writing procedures, I got it right and since then I perform ECG effectively without supervision of a registered nurse. I am good at reading and this is one of the amazing skills that help me to follow instructions and writing procedures diligently. I have good time management skill which is very necessary when following instruction and writing procedures.
Demonstrate effective time management skill one of the amazing skills that I process that makes me outstanding in this role is effective time management skill, this skill allows me to assign specific time slots to activities as per their importance both on duty and off duty. The best way I carry out effective time management during my shifts are as follows:
1. I make a to do list immediately I come to work, this help me to be more productive and keeps me intentional on the work for the day, for instance, every day at work my head nurse assign us to new patient which means I have to attend to new set of patients on a daily bases which is different from those patient I attended to on the previous day, so I will quickly make a to do list on how to attend to the patients according to their health conditions.
2. The next thing I will do is to that I will rank my task according the order of their importance. For instance, I will check each patient’s file on the system and also their care plan, I will study their cases to know who requires urgent attention, then I will attend to them first, then down to those with minor care needs as the case may be.
3. The third way I manage my time is been focused. I make sure I do away with distraction at work place for instance I don’t use my mobile phone while I am at work so that I can be focused and carry out my duties diligently and also try to avoid procrastination, I try as much as possible to deliver my job immediately as at when needed.
4. The next thing I do in order to manage my time is to delegate to my core workers or other staff and that is where team playing comes in, am a good team player and this helps me a lot in managing my time, I make sure I get my colleagues involved immediately there is a need for that and once we work as a team we get the work done on time and effectively.
5. Another strategy is keeping my patients in the loop because one the easier way to effective time management is communication between my patients and I, I notice that I safe a lot of time whenever I explain every step of the care I render to the patients .
One of the amazing skills that makes me stand out for this position is that I am empathetic. This great skill of mine makes me to sense and understand the emotions of others, I always put myself In the emotional shoe of the patients.
Another great skill that I posses is my active/attentive listening skill, this is the best way I handle my aggressive patients, I make I stay calm and listen very attentive to their complaints, when they are done, I will summarize what I have heard and then ask them question to clarify their complaints and validate their feelings.
Another skill I strongly posses that makes me stand out is good communication and interpersonal skills. Communication is the greatest tool to deliver good customer, patient, and client’s satisfaction. I make sure I speak clearly and articulately. I always provide the right amount of information needed to my patients and also ask the right question at the right time. My major goal as a carer is to develop a long-term relationship with my patients that will make them earn my trust as I work for them because, happy patients are likely to return to the clinic for all their health needs and attention. Below are list of how I deal with my patients:
1. I always identify and anticipate my patient’s needs.
2. I always suggest solutions to them.
3. I always apologise whenever something goes wrong.
4. I always listen attentively whenever my patients are speaking to me.
5. I always make sure I am available to attend to their needs. For instance, let me share my experience with an aggressive patient. I have a patient that got so angry and aggressive when she got the news that her only child was dead, she stops talking to people, kept to herself, she stopped eating, bathing and stopped taking her medication, she was destroying things around her. She was assign to me, the first thing I do was to calm her down listen to her and validated her feelings, then I began to build some rapport with her through empathy immediately I started empathizing with her by putting myself in her situation and showing that I genuinely care and feel for her,she was able to calm down, I lowered my voice and said calm words to comfort her, I made her to see reasons why she needs to bath, eat and take her medications, so I sought her permission to do those things for her, she gave me a go ahead, I cleaned her up, fed her and gave her her medications and pet her to sleep for a while, when she woke up I went to check on her by then she was very calm and happy.
I have a good writing verbal and non-verbal communication skill. I always make sure I maintain good a tone, diction and pacing when speaking with my audience. One of the things that makes me a good verbal communicator is the fact that I am a good listener, I am also very good in writing, I write very clear and concise. I always write in away that strikes a good tone while been professional and delivering information’s in an easy and understanding way.
Below are things I do to demonstrate I have a good communication skill:
1. I think before I speak.
2. I always use concise language.
3. I am always mindful of my tone
4. I always pay attention to my body language.
5. I always try to understand my audience.
6. I always listen attentively.
7. I always speak with confidence.
Finally, from my years of experience so far as a carer, I practice all I have mentioned above but most importantly I demonstrate my good communication skill that always makes me stand out in my work place is that I love to educate and inform but my patients and their family members about the patient’s condition and diagnoses, this helps my patients and their family members not to be anxious or stressed out. This single act has brought a lot of recognition from the patients and their family members, appreciating me for my effort and care. I also build a personal connection with my patients, this helps them feel safe and comfortable to open up about their feelings and they always appreciate me for that. I always show compassion to my patient as this helps them to recover fast.
I excel at observing and analysing the patient’s condition and collaboration by working closely with the nurses Also, I am well organised, calm, enthusiastic, motivated, flexible, tolerant, patient and loyal healthcare assistant with needed care skills. I am open to more training and growth with your company.
Sincerely
Kehinde Juliet Lawal
